2017

Written by Don Reid. Posted in General

It has been suggested to me by countless people to blog more often in 2017.  Many have even suggested that I make that one of my New Year’s Resolutions.  Should I do that, it would not be ‘one of”, it would be the ‘only one’, as I made no new resolutions this calendar year.  Not because I don’t need to, but because if I haven’t done it by this point in life, chances are I never will.  So here I go a-bloggin’ for mid-January with the possibilities of more to come.  (Note ‘possibilities’ is the perfect out should I fall short in my near-commitment.)

Let’s start with a few frivolous things on my mind.

This Thanksgiving, after dinner but still at the table, we played a game of questions that I made up the night before and put on cards, leaving them at each place setting.  They were just general fun questions that could be answered by all generations as we had folks around the table ranging from 6 to 88 years of age.  Examples:  If you could have named yourself, what would your first two names be? (This brought out some surprising and hilarious results.)  Who was your favorite teacher and why? (Tears around the table.)

So this morning on my way into town a new question for next year’s Thanksgiving dinner popped into my head as I took a detour through a side street due to some road work in progress on my street.  And suddenly there on my left, in a house I had never noticed before with a very attractive picture window in its living room, stood a fully decorated Christmas tree with the lights burning brightly.  January 16 and the tree is still up.  That sight then took my mind to another anomaly that Debbie and three of our grandkids encounter every morning on our way to their school.  There is a perfectly normal and pretty house on our route that has had exterior Christmas wreaths on all of their windows for at least three years now.  They never come down.  March, June, October….whatever the season, those Christmas wreaths weather right on through.  Weighing all this, I formed my first Thanksgiving dinner table question for 2017:

When are the proper times, in your mind, to put up and take down Christmas decorations?

No right or wrong answer.  Just a good discussion question that may or may not get heated and lead to someone tearing down the tinsel and throwing grandma’s Christmas sweater in the fireplace.  A nice, tranquil, family scene.

And if you like my little game, here’s another one you can play with just about any family member or friend, old or new.  Maybe the next time you go to lunch with someone or find yourself on a lengthy road trip or just sitting around drinking coffee and lying to one another, you can put this one to the test.

Tell me three things about yourself that I don’t know.

Then, of course, your turn comes and you have to come up with three things about yourself that might surprise or shock the other person, depending on how serious you want to get.  I’ll give you three things about me right now that none of you know.

I seldom eat breakfast.  I have a drawer full of old watches I can’t bring myself to throw away.  And I kiss my dog on top of her head numerous times every day.

Happy New Year! We’ll talk soon.

Tonight, September 29, WILSON FAIRCHILD will be on Larry’s Country Diner

on RFD-TV at 8 p.m. Eastern.  Check your local listings for the channel.  Then check it

again Saturday night October 1 at 11 p.m. for the rerun.

And if you’re anywhere in the area of Waynesboro, VA on Saturday night

October 15, they will be at the Wayne Theater at 8 p.m. and so will I, rooting them on!

This will be their third appearance at the Wayne this year and their fourth will be

an All-Christmas show on December 10th.

Partial?  Yeah, personally, but professionally I can honestly say I really like listening

to and watching these two guys.  They thrill me and I just wanted to share it with you.

And I to say I’m touched by their new cd would be an understatement.

Catch ‘em if you can!
